For Butch and Brady Hess, working at USIC is about more than locating utilities — it's about sharing a career, learning from one another, and continuing a family tradition built on hard work and support.
Butch has spent more than 30 years in the locating industry, including the last 12 years at USIC. When Brady was looking for a more stable career path, he turned to someone he trusted most: his dad.
"I called him and asked if USIC was hiring," Brady said. "Joining USIC was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I'm happy with my job, and I look forward to growing with the company."
Because Brady grew up around the industry, he already understood the realities of the job. Before he started, Butch offered simple advice: take your time, stay safe, ask questions, and never stop learning. Now, six months into his career, Brady says having his father nearby has made all the difference.
"My dad has always been my biggest supporter," he said. "Whether it's work or life, he's always there to give advice."
The two often spend time together after work, grabbing a meal and talking through the day's challenges. That shared understanding has strengthened their relationship.
"USIC provided the means that made it possible for me and my dad to spend more time together," Brady said. "We go to ball games, spend time with family, and just enjoy being around each other."
The respect goes both ways. Butch describes Brady as hardworking and goal-oriented, with a strong desire to build a successful career of his own.
"He's following in my footsteps, but he's creating his own path," Butch said. "I'm proud of the man, father, and person he's become."
Brady admits there was some pressure stepping into an industry where his father is so well known and respected. But that reputation has inspired him to work even harder.
"My dad's work ethic is inspirational," Brady said. "I may have used the path my dad paved, but it was my steps that led to my own success."
As Father's Day approaches, both say the holiday is less about a single day and more about appreciating the time they have together.
"We try to make every day like Father's Day," Butch said. "Life is short. Spend time with your parents. Spend time with your kids. That's what's important."
And if you ask either of them whether they'd recommend a career at USIC? The answer comes quickly. "In a heartbeat," Butch said. "Absolutely," Brady added.
