STAY SAFE IN EXTREME HEAT Show

Much of the country is experiencing record high heat indexes. If you work outdoors, like our locate technicians, it is critical that you protect yourself from the dangers of heat exhaustion and heat stroke by getting enough water, rest, and shade throughout the day. Follow the precautions recommended by medical experts (below) closely and check on your coworkers frequently throughout the day.  

HYDRATE

  1. Pre-hydrate by drinking 14-20 ounces of water before bed and one hour before beginning work
  2. Re-hydrate throughout the workday by drinking one cup of water every 15-20 minutes
  3. Replenish electrolytes by alternating sports drinks with water
 DEFEND AGAINST HEAT EXHAUSTION & HEAT STROKE
  1. Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  2. Use cooling towels
  3. Wear sunscreen – Sunburn affects your body’s ability to cool down and can make you dehydrated.
  4. Stay hydrated – avoid sugary and caffeinated drinks
 HEAT EXHAUSTION
  • Excessive sweating
  • Cold, pale, clammy skin
  • Fast, weak pulse
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Muscle Cramps 
 WHAT TO DO FOR HEAT EXHAUSTION 
  • Move to a cooler location
  • Lie down and loosen your clothing
  • Apply cool, wet cloths to as much of your body as possible
  • Sip water
  • If you have vomited, and it continues, SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY
 HEAT STROKE
  • Headache
  • Possibly unconscious
  • Internal temperature above 103⁰F
  • Rapid, strong pulse
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • No sweating
  • Hot, dry skin
 WHAT TO DO FOR HEAT STROKE
  • CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY
  • Move to a cooler environment
  • Reduce body temperature with cool cloths or a bath
  • Do NOT give fluids
